Capturing the Heart (How to keep our eyes on Jesus)

Today, I want to talk about the heart. And not the literal heart, the heart that makes up your innermost being. This heart is hard to understand and impossible to fully describe. It is where we find ourselves and can see who we are. It is where our true colors shine through. And today I want to bring the secrets of the heart out into the light.

While it might be hard to understand that the smallest action can cause the deepest pain, it’s true. Taking just one baby step into darkness can lead to a lifetime of struggle, and this is not what I would wish on anyone. Sadly, however, many people fail to see the importance of their hearts. So here is the secret key into the mysteries of your heart:

Your eyes are the doorway into your heart

What you decide to put in will overflow out. This is mostly what you watch (tv, computer, everywhere you go and everything you see). And you might think you can’t control this, but you can. Don’t get me wrong, some things aren’t controllable, but most things are. You have the choice and control over what you watch.

Your ears are mirrors reflecting your heart

What you listen to is similar to what you watch. If you put good in, your mind will be full of goodness (which is a fruit of the Holy Spirit). What you listen to has a huge impact on what you think. You need to ask yourself this question: “Are the songs I’m listening to singing about the morals I have and the life I want?” If the answer is no, I’m sorry, but you need to change something.

People have a HUGE impact on your heart.

You will become who you hangout with (I’m talking about the friends you’re constantly with and not the ones you occasionally hang out with). In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul writes truth, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’ ” Look around at your friends, and ask yourself if you want to be like them.

And finally….

Every action you take affects your heart

This might sound overdramatic, but it’s true. Who you hang out with, what you do, and every action you take will either lead your heart closer to Jesus or farther away. There is no in-between. You are either seeking Jesus or you’re not.

So how do you capture your heart?

1. Read the Bible

I know that this sounds cliche, but it is one of the MOST important parts of our walk with the Lord. Opening the Bible everyday and just reading for five minutes can change your life. God’s Word is a way of communication. It provides a glimpse of His unfathomable love and teaches us the way He wants us to live. So read the Word.

2. Put good things in

Like I said, what flows in, overflows out. Next to reading the Bible, I would have to say that changing the music I listened to changed my entire walk with the Lord.

3. Fellowship with people who will bring you closer to God

Since people have such a huge impact on your heart, it is VERY important to fellowship with people who love the Lord and desire to see His best for you. (I have a blog post about the importance of friendships: http://www.greatergaze.com/living-for-christ/oh-what-a-priceless-gift/ )

4. Thank Him for everything

I have found that thankfulness is key to a beautiful heart. When you change your focus from whatever problems you’re facing and rather thank Him for everything, your heart becomes more grateful for the goodness of the Lord. A grateful heart is beautiful.

5. Pray

Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” This verse can be such a wonderful prayer for our hearts. Pray it everyday.

6. Finally, I want to encourage you: Hope in the Lord!

He is our hope to attaining a perfectly beautiful heart one day. Even before God made you, He knew every challenge you were going to face. And He knows that we aren’t perfect. But….

“The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.”

-C. S. Lewis

Ask Him to make you good.
